The importance of the construction of the Surcin-Obrenovac highway is fourfold. First, we will employ dozens of local companies and thousands of workers. Second, we we will unburden the Ibar highway, which will further contribute to safety. Third, we will connect the two most important routes in Serbia, Corridors 10 and 11. Fourth, it will take only an hour, instead of two and half hours, to travel from Belgrade to Cacak.

This is what Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic said for Novosti. She has already announced that the agreement on financing the new highway with the Chinese Exim Bank will be signed in Riga, at the summit of China and 16 Southeastern European countries, to be held by the end of 2016.

She emphasizes that the construction of the new highway, with a length of 17.6 kilometers and a cost of USD 233.69 million, means a secure job for the local construction companies which will be employed on the construction.

– We have agreed with our partners, China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), to have local companies participate in the works and the materials with 49%. This will provide a secure job for 32 months, which is how long the construction is planned to take. The construction of the new highway includes the new bridge on the Sava and 10 smaller bridges and overpasses. The new bridge will be around 300 meters longer than the Zemun-Borca bridge on the Danube, also built by the Chinese – Mihajlovic says.

The new highway will be built in line with the highest standards, with two traffic lanes and one emergency lane in both directions. According to the analyses, close to 30,000 cars will be passing down this section daily by 2030.

The Kolubara and the Sava to be bridged

The new highway will start at the Surcin interchange at the bypass route around Belgrade. It will run to Jakovo, and then a new, 1,800 meters long bridge will be built at Baric, crossing the Kolubara and the Sava. The highway will end in Obrenovac, at the new interchange, where it will connect to the Obrenovac-Ub section, which is already being built by another Chinese contractor, Shandong High-speed Group.
