There is no marketing expect who will omit to say that choosing a memorable name for a brand is so important for its success or to underline that this success is best reflected in the fact that the brand name becomes a synonym for the product itself. In order to confirm this, we don't have to leave our country and travel far away as we can go to Cacak instead. Namely, one such brand exists there for more than 30 years - it is known in our country as "Ruzno pace", while the rest of the world knows it as "Ugly Duckling".
The story of this Cacak-based manufacturer of fishing gear, that is, wobblers, begins in early 1980s, when the Grafopromet company started working on a project to organize the first serial production of artificial baits for sports fishing.
The most famous fisherman in Cacak, Aleksandar Aco Veselinovic, the son of then Grafopromet Managing Director Konstantin Koca Veselinovic, had a rare talent for making wobblers.
The time was passing and Veselinovic junior continued to make wobblers that were so successful that all fishermen on the Morava River noticed that. When one curious fisherman was so persistent to find out what he's using to catch fish so easily, he replied - "ugly duckling".
Ever since, "Ugly Duckling" has been a synonym for every successfully made wobbler in this region. Koca Veselinovic recognized his son's talent and invited a team of experts to do a market research and check if there's interest in starting a serial production of wobblers. When this market research gave positive results, the Ugly Duckling manufacturing plant was opened within Grafopromet and Aca Veselinovic was named the constructor, first workers were hired and the production was started...
Today, Ugly Duckling annually produces between 40,000 and 60,000 wobblers in 34 versions, each available in 43 different colors.
Almost the entire production, over 93%, is intended for export. So far, Ugly Duckling products have penetrated more than 40 markets worldwide, in all continents. The largest number of wobblers is exported to Germany and Italy, that is, the western part of the EU. The company's plans for the future are based on the conclusion of contracts with new distributors for certain countries with which they have not established a business relationship, which would ensure they can sell their entire annual capacity and, thus, allow for smooth operations and future of the company. By the way, Ugly Duckling has six permanent employees and more than 10 workers in the season. When it comes to production, people at the company say that nearly 95% of wobblers are made of wood, while only 5% are made from high-quality plastics and are used to catch big catfish.
There is a large number of wobbler manufacturers nowadays, but there is no serious fisherman who does not have at least few Ugly Duckling wobblers in his collection.
