Do you tell the truth about what books you read?

A survey in Great Britain has showed that as many as 60% of people pretend they read the books they have never even opened. Topping the list of the books people lie about is Alice`s Adventures In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.

George Orwell`s 1984, J.R.R. Tolkien`s The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, Leo Tolstoy`s War And Peace and Anna Karenina, and The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle rank highest in this list.

Among the other books that people read much less than they claim are Pride And Prejudice by Jane Austen, JD Salinger`s Catcher In The Rye, and even the Harry Potter series.

A study of the reading habits of 2,000 Britons commissioned by the BBC Store found that one in four bluffed about reading a classic when a TV adaptation of it was shown, with the most popular reasons being not wanting to miss out on the conversation and wanting to appear more intelligent.

There is a clear reason why one in three admitted they would not correct someone if they wrongly assumed they were better read than in reality – 60 per cent of those surveyed said being well-read made a person appear more attractive.
