Italian company Gruppo Zilio expects its water treatment plant in Zrenjanin to be put into operation late this year. This plant will be filtering tap water that was declared unsuitable for drinking back in 2004 due to a large concentration of arsenic in it.

Nenad Obradovic, the general manager of Gruppo Zilio Serbia, told Beta news agency that the City of Zrenjanin had been submitted the documentation for building permit the day before, adding that the permit was expected to be issued in one week.

As he noted, works can commence as soon as the building permit is issued, most probably in mid-October, and the water treatment plant will be put into operation by the end of this year.

Obradovic said they experienced some difficulties for technical and administrative reasons, but he stressed that the preparation of documentation had run parallel to the construction of water treatment plant, so that ready-made modules from Italy would be shipped to Zrenjanin and assembled there.

- The company has enviable references in this field, this technology has already been applied to a number of projects and, thanks to its application here, the citizens of Zrenjanin will finally have healthy drinking water - said Obradovic.

An agreement between the City of Zrenjanin, that is, the public utility company Vodovod i Kanalizacija, and the Italian company Gruppo Zilio was signed early February, and the City Assembly rented out a land owned by the city to that company in late April.
