Vignettes to replace toll in 2015

In six to eight months, toll payment collection in Serbia could be replaced by vignettes and the option of introducing them on the first category roads, not only highways, has been considered, the minister of construction, traffic and infrastructure, Zorana Mihajlovic said.

- Vignette would first of all decrease unbearable jams at the toll payment places and enable better funds spending control for roads maintenance. Therefore, we are considering introducing vignettes at the first category roads, not only highways. Their price would be similar to the one in Slovenia and Hungary. We are currently working on an extensive analysis which should end in December which means vignettes could be introduced in Serbia in six to eight months –Mihajlovic said for Blic.

The minister explained that vignette; stickers used in road usage payment would mean bigger investments in road infrastructure.

- The state earns EUR 150 m from tolls annually and with vignettes the figure would reach up to EUR 300m which means bigger investments and better roads – Mihajlovic says.

As Blic reports, according to current estimations, vignette price for cars in Serbia would total EUR 65.

Truck drivers would pay the fee per kilometer and the satellite would monitor their moves. If examples from the neighboring countries would be followed, citizens will be able to buy vignettes at almost any kiosk or a gas station.

Depending on the fact whether it is a long or short trip, drivers in European countries choose between daily, weekly, monthly and annual vignette. For instance, a weekly vignette for car drivers in Hungary costs EUR 9.
